I own both lenses and and shoot a lot of sports. You can take great pics with the cheap 70-300mm but you will greatly increase your chances of getting acceptable shots by spending the extra $300+ on the 70-300mm VR. When shooting sports the VR is worthless and may even reduce focusing speed. The VR only comes in handy when shooting still subjects. The image quality is noticeably better on the VR model and it's an AF-S lens that will work on more camera bodies. AF-S lenses will focus noticeably faster.
