Someone asked me to post this and sticky it ... so I will.
Nikon users and Nikon, some while ago, had reported issues / procedures to adhere to with the VR lenses that, if not followed, could lead to the failure of the VR mechanism, so it's not a bad idea to remember this procedure when changing lenses (but more so when changing VR lenses off of the camera). 1- Power off the camera 2- Wait for a few seconds so the VR mechanism "winds down". 3- Press the lens release lock button 4- Turn lens to remove. 5- face camera down (my preference so that dust falls out and not into the camera) 6- Cap both ends of lens that was removed 7- Put new lens on 8- Turn the camera body back on. The only lens I ever had a VR issue on was the 70-200 f/2.8 VR. Mine went to Nikon shortly after I bought it and they replaced the VR mechanism as well as correcting the original "ground wire" problem that the lens exhibited. I have 3 VR lenses. 300 f/2.8 VR, 70-200 f/2.8 VR and the 105 f/2.8 VR micro. Julio __________________

i was the one that asked nikonfreak to make it a sticky and post this .. but one correction first turn off the vr > than wait for the vr to stop > than switch off the body.. the tip to hold the body facing down is good .. |

I think shutting down the VR before removing the glass from the body makes perfect sense. You turn everything else off before removing so why would a lens be any different? Just like making sure the camera is off and the green light is out before you try and remove your Memory Card. You don't want to have the camera in mid communication with the Mem Card when your trying to pull it out. Strange things can happen while the handshake is still taking place.... corrupted images, missing images and so on. |

Shure it makes sense , but just liked nikon freak wrote , there issues known that people did it wrong Nikon worte to me that the correct way to do it is: 1). switch off the VR on the lense 2) wait for the VR to stop ( a few seconds ) 3) check that the green light of CF/SD isn't blinking or burning 4) turn off the camera 5) remove the lens while pressing the lense release button and hold the camera facing down to prevent dust from comming in 6) cape the lens (front and back) 7) turn on a new lense turn on body9) eventually turn ON VR.. 10) you are ready to take a picture |

You just have to remember to turn the VR back on, can't count the number of times I had forgotten to do that. Take a bunch of shots and then find out the VR is off.

...and just for the record and for D50&D70freak, who also has a Canon 300D and a 18-55IS: none of this is really necessary with the Canon IS lenses, they can be swapped 'hot' (IS on, camera on) without any burden... ...€0.02... Kindest regards! Max@Home |

Never saw this until today, Ive been just taking the lenses off, then putting the other on without turning off the body or lens. Haven't had a problem, never noticed that it said to do this in the manual, will have to go back and read it again.

From the Nikon D90 Users Manual, page 25, Attach a Lens
Page 8 for the D200 manual, page 18 for the D60 maual In the lens manuals same thing, the first instruction is, "Turn the camera off." __________________
