It depends. When I travel on vacations, I care about light weight. My general vacation kit is one body, a 19-35mm f3.5~4.5 Vivitar Series 1, a 28-200 f3.5~5.6 Nikkor AF-D, and a 50mm f1.8 Nikkor AF-D for low light.
For any specific shooting mission, it depends what I'm shooting. If I'm seriously shooting a wide angle subject, like a landscape.I'll carry 2 bodies, the aforementioned 19-35mm, a 14mm f2.8 Sigma prime and a 24mm Nikkor AF-D prime. I might also carry my 28-200mm on the chance I might need something long. If I'm seriously shooting a Macro subject, I'll carry my Macros - both of which are manual focus lenses: a 55mm Micro-Nikkor, and a 90mm Tamron SP If I'm seriously shooting wildlife, I'll carry 2 bodies - one with a 70-210mm Vivitar Series One f2.8~4, which I hand hold, and one with a 200-400mm f5.6 Tamron, which I'll always use on a tripod. I might also bring my manual focus 300mm f2.8 Nikkor with a 2X teleconverter - which I also will only use on a tripod. |

If I am just going out and about the 18-55mm VR does just fine.
For Birding I carry the 55-200mm VR. I take my bag most of the time so I have both of them near by. |

It depends for me also for general shooting such as I have no set image in mind ,I take my 24-85 f2.8 mm Nikkor out for a stroll it allows me 1:1 macro if needed and decent wide angle also fair tele capabilities.
For birding and outdoor portraits my 70-200mm f2.8 vr Nikkor. When summer is here I mainly shoot Wild flowers so my 105mm f2.8 vr Nikkor micro and my 60mm f2.8 Nikkor micro are my main arsenal. |

Nikon D3 or D300 (1 or 2 bodies each depending on what and where)
Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 The 14-24 will sometimes be left out unless I know I am planning to shoot wide angle that day. Julio |

Most times it's two bodies w/grips, and the Nikkor 28-70 f2.8, along with a Nikkor 70-200 f2.8. For field sports I carry a Nikkor 300mm f4 during the day, and either a Nikkor 300mm f2.8 or Nikkor 200mm f2.0 on a monopod for night venues. I have either a Nikkor 20-35mm f2.8, or Nikkor DX 12-24 if I anticipate really tight quarters. It changes all the time.

If it is a "one lens-only" outing, it is a D300 and most likely the Nikon 18-200 VR or the Tamron 28-300 VC (if I think the extra reach will be needed). If I can carry a "bag of tricks" it will be the D3 with the Nikon 28-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 VR f/2.8. If "wide" is needed it is the Nikon 14-24 f/2.8.

When travelling light I carry my D300 with the 16-85 VR Zoom.
For more serious planned outings I add my Tokina 12-24 Zoom and my Nikon 70-300 VR Zoom - if close ups are likely I also take one of my Sigma Macro lenses (50 or 105 mm) and the SB-600 Flash. |

Graydog, have you had much time with the 18-270? I'm wondering about the lens's ability to autofocus, especially at the long end. Do you find it "hunts"? I have the 28-300 and I frequently can't get it to AF at the long end when the aperture is 6.3. Do you have the same problem.
By the way, where are you going FL? Jeff |
