Loving it so far. Just got it last night, but am happy with everything so far. The 18-105 is fast, silent and appears to be sharp (at least on the display). Due to all the menus, I havent had too much of a chance to play with the camera. Hoping to do that this weekend.
The manual that comes with the camera is akin to war and peace, heh. But except for the menu settings and 1 or 2 other buttons, its very similar to at least the D70. The only extra buttons being the Fn button. (That could get someone in trouble. "Honey...press the F'n button ) and the AF button.__________________

Congratiolations with this new "toy" it seems that the difference that used to be there between compacts and dslr's have been erased by Nikon as of the D90 it is possible to record video on a dslr honestly i still can't see why this took so long.. the next buy will be the D90 but second hand after the D1000 the D3000 and probably the D7000 they must come and the D 800 , the D 900 and than i'm probably 50 years young ..

So friday night I went to my old highschool to shoot a football game to test the camera. (was feeling nostaligic and went to their web site and saw it was homecoming. Said what the heck and went)
Anyway, I was very impressed with the camera. The 18-105 is a bit slow for sports. Even at 6400 it was only doing at best 125th a second. So most of the shots came out blurry. But even so, the colors came out really vibrant and for shooting at such a high iso, the noise reduction is just awesome. Here are a couple examples: This one was shot at 3200 iso http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Glaydor/3200.jpg And this one at 6400 http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v488/Glaydor/6400.jpg These arent a true rep of the picture as I dont have photoshop here where im posting. (Home computer is acting wonky. So I couldnt even look at these till today at <cough> work) They are just screen caps of the originals posted into ms paint. This is with the high iso noise reduction on. Originals were fine jpg in large image mode. I can post exif data if you want. |

I've had a D80 for over 4 years and I love it. I was looking at adding a D300 about 6 months ago. I started reading the specs and reviews on the bought the D300 and the D90. I ended up buying the D90. A fantastic camera for low light and night shots. No real noise problems even a ISO 6400. It's the perfect mate to the 80, all the controls are almost identical. I also added my first VR lens and I haven't decided if they are a value as of yet.

It works out.
You'll never miss the superior AF module (same as the Dx portion of the D3 AF module), 51 focus points, and 15 cross-type focus points in the D300/D300s, metal body, weather sealing, 1/8000 shutter, 9 brackets, 3 zones in CLS and the new D300s features: dual memory cards, video, etc. ![]() |

having owned a d300 before moving to a d700 i can honestly say the d90 (i just bought for the small form and DX sensor) is every bit as good as the d300 as far as ISO and IQ is concerned, the AF is now where near the d300 but if sport is not on the cards i would not spend the extra on a d300 tbh, for my d700 it makes a great second body, i love it

Up until today I liked the D90. Taking some family shots, then went to shoot some of my great niece and the camera locked up. Tried turning it off then back on, even took battery out and still nothing
. After I get home, I got out the manual to see if I could figure out the error messages. first was a 1)- No lens attached / non CPU lens attached (only have had one lens on it and never removed hmmm) 2) Camera malfunction - wouldn't do anything and camera wouldn't turn off, except for removing battery. Tuesday morning after work It will be going for service/repair/ or replaced. If this would've happened while in the mountains, it would've went over one of them. |

Bevis, I assume you took the lens off and then remounted it?
Does it function (turn off and on, etc.) with NO lens attached? Is the lens a VR? When you take out the battery, reinsert it, and turn the unit on, when does the error show up, immediately upon turning the camera on, or after you try and take a picture, etc? Jeff |

Upgrade from a Canon XTi, to a Nikon D40x, to a Nikon D80 to my current Nikon D90. I'm all over the place!!! Ha!!! Love the D90.... Love the big, fat 3" screen, live-view when needed, video when needed, 4.5 frames per second... perfect for me!!!

Just got a D90 a few weeks ago and have been working on my shooting skills (haven't used more than a point and shoot in the past 20 years). I'm loving it. Was out the other day to take pics of waterfowl and was impressed. Threw the camera into Sports mode because I was curious how well it would stop action and, on a tripod using the 18-105mm kit lens at approximately 30+ yards, was able to capture decent detail of a Canadian goose's flapping wings. The graininess of this shot is because it has been cropped significantly to zero in on the bird. A 70-300mm lens is already on my wish list for future shoots!
