Would the D80 be a good upgrade from my D50? My DD wants a Dslr- I was thinking of giving her my D50 and buying a D80 for myself. A D80 body with 18-135mm Nikkor lens can be bought new for $750-$799. It seems like a good price and I don't really need anything fancier than my D50.
Thanks ![]() __________________

secondly the 18-135 lens is not so good either the 18-70 for instance is much much better, better optics, better build. and the price to pay is to high imho.. from the d80 there are many threads about problems, so my advice will be buy a second hand d50 or new if still available , or invest in the d90 for DD and keep the D50 yourself.. believe me or not , the D50 is perhaps the best digital camera ever build by nikon! ![]() |

I went this route and was very pleased as a matter of fact my daughter now has my D50. I have since added a D200 to my D80 but I think you will really enjoy the D80 it is a very capable DSLR. Plus the price of the D80 makes it a great buy!
I will say this I have had both the 18-70 and 18-135 and I found the 18-135 to be sharper, the 18-70 to have less CA and distortion. The 18-135 has more reach and focuses closer but the 18-70 has a better build so I would say the two lens are a push. That said I would get a D80 body only and look at the new 18-105VR. Jim |

Now the D300 I got last Monday is another story! Had to send it back to B&H. New one arrives this coming Tuesday. I've got a lot of Nikon gear, and the 300 was the first time I've ever had an issue. I guess every now and then a bad one will get out. It just sucks when its you that gets it. |

I own and use both the D50 and D80 quite a lot. Both are great cameras. The only problem I have heard of on the D80 was a occasional battery indication. There is a firmware fix downloadable from Nikon that corrects this problem. I must agree with Wood. The D50 is a great camera. The D80 does have more features and has proven to be a VERY reliable camera. The price range is good and I have no desire to "upgrade" to the D300 or D90.
I would also go for the D80 body and check out the 18-105 VR. |

Thanks for the replies
![]() The only new D50 I could find was almost $1000 for body only ![]() I have no complaints with mine. I don't do a lot of Photoshopping but I tend to crop and thought the 10mps would help me a little there. The price on the D80 attracted me to it. I thought about a D40 but I have some older Nikon lens(70-210mmf/4 and a 50mm f/1) that DD would be using and they wouldn't work on it. The reviews I read on the D80 were mostly very good, a few complained about overexposure problems. I'll check out that 18-105mm lens. I have the 70-300mm VR so I wouldn't miss the 106-135mm. Is that lens worth the $200+ more it would cost over the 18-135mm? Beach has the body w/18-135 for $782 or body only for $629. The 18-105mm lens is $369. DD started college this year(a costly one at that) so I really need to be as frugal as possible. Thanks again ![]() |

$1k for a D50
?? Wow. Thats insane. Might as well get a D90 with the 18-105 VR for $1299I have no experience with the D80, so I cant comment directly on it. Only can say that it seems a lot of people here have them. And they just recently had a firmware upgrade (last week) |
