Default Nikon announces problem with 18-200 VR on older bodies

We would like to take this opportunity to inform our valued customers of an
issue that may occur when the AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED
lens for digital-SLR cameras is used with Nikon D70, D2H, and D100 cameras.

Symptom: In some rare cases, the camera is unable to acquire accurate focus on
near subjects when shooting at wide-angle positions and autofocusing at
infinity.

Cause: This issue is caused by incompatibilities in AF control at short
distances between the new Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-
ED.

On the D70 - the problem occurs with versions PRIOR to version 2.0 firmware. It
does NOT happen with version 2.0

On the D2H - A new firmware upgrade is coming at the end of March or beginning
of April. Nothing you can do right now about it.

On the D100 - D100 users must send their cameras in to Nikon for service.

Howzat again? Autofocusing at infinity for near subjects?

I know you quoted this accurately; I checked the Nikon site. It doesn't make any more sense over there.

I think they just decided to mesh all the problems into one sentence. It should probably read "The camera is unable to acquire focus on near subjects when shooting at wide-angle positions. <new sentence about AF at infinity>"

supposedly there are problems reported at near focus and infinity. Of course, that's what's buzzing on the boards, not what Nikon is officially reported. Nikon is, unfortunately, not specific as to what the problems are.
