Default sRGB and Adobe RGB

I have the new toy, batteries installed and required assembly complete. I've had some fun with it. Now woudln't you know a question would come up. I'll ask it here because the explanaiton in the manual (yes I read it and have the PDF in the laptop for quick refrence) is not very clear.

When setting up the color space, what is the big difference in sRGB and Adobe RGB? The book says sRGB is designed for printing straight out of the camera with no PP (not likely to happen with me). Does this setting do anything beyond moving the underline in the file name to a different place?

On the job, the boss says to use the sRGB. That's where I've shot without regard to why. Its just the way we do things. It certainly helps with filing when the file names stay consistant, granted. So this is an option that until now I've not given though to.

I'm not quite clear on why if I set the camera to Adobe RGB and open the image in Photoshop 7 the warning box about no assigned working color space. And the default box is checked to have PS assign sRGB when it closes. I thought the camera was doing PS a favor by doing something PS liked.

All input greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Steve

Adobe RGB has a bigger color gamut, ie range between color differences, covering more "depth".

I suggest jumping into the Image Editing forum and researching "color space" using the search function. This is more than just a Nikon specific setting and you'll get more info there on how to proceed. This thread is a good place to start: sRGB VS RGB

There really isn't a right/wrong answer here. Just pick one that suits your workflow.

Thanks Brian,

Insomuch as it was an option setting on a Nikon camera I posted here. I don't know what other camera makers options are, so didn't know how universal the answer might be. Furthermore, I wanted input from other Nikon users who use PS.

Thanks for the link, I'm off now to see what else I can learn.

Regards,

Steve

The big difference is aRGB is a wider, larger color scheme than sRGB, it contains more color, and has smoother transients between colours.

If you shoot RAW(NEF) all this is not important, as you can assign the color space to the RAW later.

It is a bit like 12-bit or 14-bit color: you can capture more color detail with 14bit or aRGB, but it needs more tweaking and more work afterwards to really benefit. If you 'go for the extra mile' in IQ, then 14-bit and aRGB are the way

& about PS7: your camera is probably not known to PS7 as PS7 is quite old by now , so it might not be able to read the (sometimes proprietary-based) color-info-field in the EXIF of your files...

...hope this helps some, *my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards!

Brand has nothing to do with it. See the link for my posts detailing the subject. Hopefully it will help. If you still have questions, feel free to add them there.

Never "assign" a color space, always "convert." That is also covered in the other thread.
