Default D70 Popup flash question

Is it possible to turn off the flash in the priority modes? I know in the presets, you can turn the flash to off. But in none of the priority modes am I able to turn the flash to off. This is my only complaint about the camera. There are times I want to cut the wires cause the flash popped up. And of course if you hold it down......

But I just dont see the option in any of the menus.

Yeah. Sorry about that. PSAM. I can adjust the flash to auto red eye, different syncs, but you cant turn it off like you can in the specific modes (Portrait, sports, etc). At least I havent found a way.

The flash should not pop-up automatically in PSAM. It should only pop-up when you push the flash button on the side of the prism housing.

Push the flash button on the side of the camera that causes the flash to pop up,
HOLD THE BUTTON IN, now turn the command dial with your thumb until the top
display on the camera indicates the flash/off sign. Let go the button and push
the flash unit down. There you go!

In any of the P, A, S, M modes, the flash will fire only if you open
the flash yourself. It will not open automatically. In some of the
vari-program modes, like AUTO, the camera will open the flash if it
thinks it is needed.

See page 182 of the user manual (US English edition) for a list of
those modes in which the flash will pop up automatically. If you don't
want that to happen, use a mode without auto pop up.

Ok. There must be an issue with this one I got. The flash just loves to fire(it even fires when closed. Love that burn smell....) Sigh. Glad I got it cheap. Guess ill deal with it till I can afford an D80 or see what the D90 is like pricewise.

Thanks for the info, guys

Ebay body... And after the ordeal I went through to get it (see my long fed ex post in the general section), theres nothing I can do at this point. Well, there is 1 thing. I forsee some wire cutters and some electrical tape in this cameras future.

Glad I got a pay raise kicking in this week, lol (I laugh so that I dont have to cry). I might go for the D80 sooner then planned.

Set the FLASH to Manual and the lowest setting, that way at least it will not use up as much power and will not smell as bad.

OR BETTER:

Also if you set the flash in commander mode it will still flash but at such a tiny amount that it wil not affect the photos at all.

Yeah. Tried that. Just afraid of what damage could be done if allowed to continue. I might <cough> disable <cough> the flash and just get an sb flash for when I want to use flash.

Im sure some will call me a dumbarse for this, but the surgery on the camera was a success! Snipped the flash wires and wrapped them in electrical tape to keep them seperated. Very neat and tidy and still fit in the housing. What finally made me decide to do this was after 1 flash fire, I saw a little black smoke coming from the flash. Just a puff, but still. And I figured it was worth it over sending it out and paying someone a few hundred or whatever to repair it.

Didnt feel like it was a bad thing as I consider this just a starter camera to get use to digital SLR's (if anyones able to use my pics that I post and figure out how many shots the camera has taken, that would be great. I dont have one of those programs that people talk about that tell this).

Since I almost never use flash, this wont be a setback for me. And if I did, I would just get an sb600 since I dont need anything more then that. And like I said, its a learner camera until the D90 comes out.

The program Photo Me

PhotoME - Exif, IPTC & ICC Metadata Editor

You can look a the EXIF info on your pictures and if the D70 stores the shots it has taken it will be shown.

The D70 AUTO mode is the only one that should open the flash automatically. It is designed to be "foolproof", is pretty much the least useful, I use it only when handing the camera to someone else to take a shot. PSAM should NOT open the flash without your action. Try a shot in auto, then in Program (P), it should react differently
