Actually you are incorrect in saying that it is discontinued, B & H certainly do carry this lens as the newer version, Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 II EX DG APO Macro HSM AF Lens for Nikon and Canon.

The earlier version had certain issues that were addressed by the upgrade II Macro model.

I certainly do think that this lens is a good buy, does the job and the price saving justifies the lack of VR if you respect that fact and keep the shutter speed up accordingly.

I am very happy with mine.

Phil

Hello,

Thanks for the added replies. I decided to get the 28-75 for it's low price and I'll buy a D300 unless Nikon surprises us with something more than a D90 at Kina.

Maybe the rumored update to the 70-200 VR will lower the price of the current 70-200 enough for me in the coming months?

I was talking about the Nikon 28-70 f/2.8. I guess you didn't get that.
