Default For D70 users

Hey, I was reading Ken Rockwell's write up on the D70 (Nikon D70) and was wondering what people thought of his advice. Specifically this line:

OPTIMIZE IMAGE: I prefer the vivid color I get from Fuji's Velvia 50 film, so I tweak my D70 to give color as vivid as I can get. To do this go to MENU > Shooting Menu (camera icon) > Optimize Image > Custom > (set Saturation to + and Color Mode to IIIa) > - - Done > OK.

That and some of the other tweaks as well. I too like vivid colors (one reason I do a lot of nature and scenic shots) and want the colors to really pop. So I was looking for opinions on this.

I also use filters like the split ND, polarizer and sunset ones. Ive also got the star and fog ones for when I want to try stuff (Though I very very rarely use these 2)

I think he likes his pictures to look like they came out of Chernobyl right after the nuclear meltdown.

Honestly... increasing saturation that much on landscape images is fine but with people, you're going to get un-natural looking skin tones and radio active looking colors.

Split ND's, CP's and other kinds of filters are fine to use but I'm one that flips my camera to standard or neutral when using such filters. I don't use star or fog filters... too much stuff to carry around most of the time. The only filters that usually find their way into my bag are CP's and 2 and 4 stop ND as well as split ND grads.

Julio

I have my D50 set up that way, but you must back it down for people pictures. Just like Julio said, you'll get un-natural skin tones. Otherwise, Rockwell's settings give great results...

I like nikons for their more true, natural color.
If I want to give my images a little punch, which I do a lot, I like to do it in post where I have complete control.

Good to know. I do mostly shoot scenics, this is why I was curious. Just got the camera body and dont have a lens just yet, so I couldnt do any testing myself, so figured Id ask what others thought.

Oh and with the filters, I think ive used the fog once or twice total in the 10+ years ive had it. And the star one not much more.

at least I have a base idea where to start at now. So thanks guys

If you want to test the waters with such settings, leave your camera on Standard and in a photoshop hue and saturation layer, increase saturation by about +12 or so.

Yeah. Unfortunatly, I have limited PS knowledge. Ive really got to dive more into it. Right now, I use little more then the auto fix settings and the clone stamp.

If you want to get a lens just to get you started you can find Nikon 35-70's on ebay for about 30 bucks almost all day long.

or you can make a pinhole body cap in 5 min.
