Default Quick Note on Firmware update for D3

Based on my weekend of shooting... my D3 is exhibiting signs of scrambled jpgs. Out of about 600 images shot over the weekend (personal fun) I lost about 14 images.

Just as a quick note on the firmware update and problems as to why the firmware update was needed. Images were being scrambled as they were written on the memory cards.

It's still problematic from what I am seeing.

As it seemed, and as we know, there was some level of image corruption when shooting high speed sequences with the D3...

I've done the firmware update (and fixes) on my D3.

Over the weekend, I had two images that showed properly on image review after shooting, but later in the evening when I went back and reviewed the images shot that day, in the camera, I found two images that showed the symptoms of the file corruption problem that the firmware update was supposed to have fixed.

After transfer. I had about 12 images that exhibited the problem.

I don't know why it happened. This is somewhat troubling in that:

1- I wasn't shooting high speed sequence. I was in single shot mode and .jpg, Large, Fine mode. No RAW captures...
2- I've already done the firmware update.
3- My D3 hasn't exhibited the problem before, even shooting high speed sequences.
4- (and most importantly) The firmware "fix" may not have solved the problem.

Time to contact Nikon. Interestingly enough... I wonder if shooting RAW + Jpg it won't happen since that's what the firmware update was supposed to have corrected.

Julio

Julio, have you ruled out a bad CF card? How do you have the camera set to deal with the second card slot? Have you tried saving to the second card simultaneously?

Not yet, but I figured that'd be the next steps. Eliminate the possibilities...

First I'll go ahead, reformat the cards, and let the camera write simultaneously to both cards. Right now it's on write after full go to the second card. After that, I'm going to go ahead and reformat the memory cards but I'm going to go ahead and switch from the Ridada 16 GB cards to the Sandisk Extreme III 12 Gig cards that I have and see if the problem repeats itself.

Sounds like a good strategy. I have yet to experience the same problem with the D3, although admittedly I probably haven't put it throught he paces as much as you have. I recently took it with me out west to Utah and Arizona, along with my D300, and never stopped using the D300 long enough to play with the D3. Someday soon, I hope to "exercise" it a bit.

I'll be interested to hear any additional results you get, and will gladly let yo know if I have any similar porblems. I too have performed the firmware upgrade, so no excuse there.

Incidentally, I noticed you are located in So. Florida, I'm on the west coast in Naples, are you on the east coast?
