The size nor the time of the offering is clear, only the possibility that time marches on.

Is your hard drive not full enough? I have a 44" printer, but few people can make use of such file sizes unless you want to crop instead of changing lenses.

Well I guess we have to put something out there for the pixel counters and gearheads to brag on about. How much resolution is really necessary? Are we honestly going to enlarge a 20X24 from a postage stamp size sampling of an original image?

I'd say more than roumors. The recent firmware update for the D3 had some files embedded for D3X and 24 Megapixel resolution settings. I'd say that's a pretty good roumor perpetuator.

With the Olympic games coming up, can't you imagine that the games would be a perfect time to introduce a new body and announce that certain photographers will be using it at the games? Of course, one wonders about that because the D3 would be a better sports camera for such purposes, but it's fun to guess.

As for the rest of the specs...only time will tell, but I strongly suspect that given a high megapixel count the camera will behave much more like a high megapixel count, FX sensor sized, D300... I wouldn't expect the high ISO ability of the D3 to carry over to the D3x, nor would I expect the same high speed frame rates.

I'd also expect that the D3x, if announced at 24 Megapixels to be priced somewhere around $7,999.00 USD. I'd also expect a price drop for the D3 by about $500 when the new body is announced....at which time I'll probably pick another one up.

Song... remember there is a market for those that shoot medium format and there is certainly a market for higher resolution images. There are those that shoot images that are used for posters, billboards, and a whole lot of other larger print sizes. More resolution means more options for cropping and remember nothing is a standard size anymore. 35mm frame size? 5:4, DX format... What is 8x10? What is 11x14? Is that standard? Hmm... what about 13x19?

How are you liking the D3 so far? It's an amazing camera isn't it?

I'm heading to Disney for the weekend and I'm going to go ahead and bring the D3 along. I'm going to try to avoid using flash altogether if at all possible and see what happens.

I hated my next to last camera body purchase: S5. For me, just was not what I was looking for. So I was a little hesitant with the D300 and later (last week the D3).

Could not be more pleased! The 2200 ISO on the D3 is like 200 ISO on my Kodak or. Incredible!

Other than the electricity a photo gets charged up with, I see no reason to not shoot the D3 without a flash. However, a flash does add energy to your shots. They could tend to look a little less POP without.

A 23mp D3x camera will be designed for studio to compete directly with high res canon offerings. It will not be fast like the D3 and will not need to be. In the world of studio photography higher res will always be a benefit allowing more detail to be captured

I don't know if it'd capture more detail specifically ...although certainly a greater pixel density in the same size sensor as a D3 (FX) would certainly help in that regard, but greater dynamic range is always a welcomed advantage.

This camera will certainly be geared towards the studio photographer and it's very likely we'll see D300 like specifications in that body, just with the higher resolution sensor and FX sized sensor. Nikon may have a twist on the AF system as well. Such a camera would be excellent for pretty much studio and all around use. Again, expect a price in the $8,000 range.

I'm only completely speculating but i reckon it will be cheaper than that. Nikon has never released a body that's more than $5000. I think they will take away some of the D3 features which are not studio centric (like 8 fps etc) to reduce the cost. Studio monkeys (imo) will not be drawn to a new system if the cost of switching is too high. I think Nikon will throw a spanner in the works and release something not too far from the price of the D3. Now that would create a stir

Julio, the D3 is an amazing camera, the best I have used so far. You should have no trouble not using flash. I have shot at very dim lit parties without flash, there was noise though at iso 25600. LOL!

Enjoy that camera!

Take care, Larz

Very good points. Karma for you.

The real question here is whether or not $8K is really all that much for the camera depending on what features the body has. Canon's recent introduction at the high megapixel count is selling at roughly the $8K price.

Of course it won't have 8 fps and such... that's why I said it likely will have a D300 like feature set but at the higher mp count.

Getting back to my other point... Is $8K really that high of a price point? Think about the cost of studio shooting, sets, props, computer systems, lighting, etc .etc etc... and then $8K is not a lot given other alternatives available at that level. What's a leaf going to cost? Hassleblad? Mamiya with a digital back at 24 megapixels? All options are $10K + if not double that.

Yep, best I've seen so far as well. Nothing compares for low light work. I have settled in nicely for concert work into the 2500 ISO level as a good comfortable point.

The only time I'd be worried about a flash is for fill flash. So the SB800 is going to be coming along for the ride (literally). I think it'll be fun. I wouldn't normally take the bigger body on vacation but it's only a weekend trip.

LOL, mine goes everywhere with me. On vacation, I take 2 bodies and a bunch of glass, just because you never know.
