Default Nikkor "D" lenses not recording subject distance??

Hello- I use both the 18-200mm VR DX and the 50mm 1.8 D lenses. Both of these lenses are suppose to be able to calculate the subject distance from the camera. Whenever I check this attribute in my exif data (in all exif viewers) the field says "Unknown". Are my lenses sending this data correctly to my D200? Any thoughts??
Thanks in advance,
JS

This only relates to TTL flash. The distance isn't actually recorded in the EXIF data.
