Default Cable Release Options

Looks like the D80 is the "lowest" model that has a cable release. Is this true?
I need an inexpensive Nikon body (since I have a D80 now and would use the same lenses, etc) for a copy stand. The wireless ML-L3 on my D80 is too finicky for me (doesn't always trigger). The cable release is very reliable.

Yes.

The D70s (not the plain D70) takes the same cable release that your D80 does. You should be able to find these inexpensively on the used market.

The Nikon MC DC1 cable release is inexpensive (in this one case).

25326 Nikon MC-DC1 Remote Release Cord for D70s, D80 Digital SLRs - 1M (3 Feet Long)

There are third party or Ebay equivalents, but they are not much cheaper (in this case).

Shucks
The camera needs to be largest MP too. D70s is only 6.1. I'll be using this to photograph plant materials that are too big for the microscope. So I might be doing a considerable amount of enlargement. I forgot to include that as a necessary spec .. that limits the options to the D80 then I do believe
