Smile New User of D80

Bought a D80 with Nikon 18-200 VR lens together with a SB600 Speedlite at Cameraworld in Chelmsford on Friday. Walked through the town on Saturday and took some pictures which I have added to Flickr. Going to Paris for a long weekend next week, looking forward to taking a lot of pictures. Initial impressions are very good moved up from a Panasonic FZ7.

Good luck dg. Its a great camera. I got the 18-135 and I'm very happy with it but I see that I should have gotten the 200VR. Oh well, but there is nothing wrong with my kit lens. I would practice a lot with it before you go on your trip. Especially, with trying out shooting in Raw. At this point I shoot everything in Raw and find that its a great advantage if your exposure is not exactly on the money. Especailly with using the external flash.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

the D80 is a great camera. before you leave to Paris, practice as much as you can. there is a lot to learn with the D80 as any other DSLR to get the best from it.

Congratulations on your purchase. They generally seem a knowledgeable and friendly bunch of people in Camera World. Got some great tripod advice there last year. I hope to be going back in the not too distant future for a D300...

Congrats on your new purchase. Don't forget to stick the manual in your camera bag before you leave for Paris.

That combo was out of my league begin december 2007 I have seriously thought about getting it. I choose a k10d with the kit lenses 18-55 50-200 they did sell around 400 dollar less. I was moving from a panasonic FZ5. You're going to love your gear its an ideal combo for travel. But make sure you also enjoy Paris!

My manual is so lame. I got the Nikon D80 Digital Field Guide by David D. Busch to help with the little things. When I do remember to read it. LOL

It's not the best manual but in a pinch it can come in handy.

I've got the same combo, except for an SB800 Speedlite. I took the camera on holiday to Canada straight after getting it and wasn't over happy with the results. Then I discovered Camel and got put onto Thom Hogan's manual for the D80 Complete Nikon D80 Guide by Thom Hogan
Well worth the 15 quid and it completely changed my opinion. Up until then I was a bit disappointed with my efforts. Just wish I'd started with it rather than the rather poor Nikon manual.

Only other issue I have is the lens creep on the 18-200. I tend to trip over it when I'm walking along... and I need to keep my finger on the zoom when shooting up or down. From what I read it's a fairly common problem. I also discovered that switching to VR mode is something you can really only do with stationary subjects. Marathon runners don't count...

Have fun. And don't forget to take a coat with you. It's blerry cold on the mainland at the moment.

Thanks for all the interest expressed by members from around the world.
I have added a new folder to my galleries Andrewsfield.
This is a flying club where I gained a PPL back in the 1970s.
All pictures are reduced resolution and where taken with my D80 and 18-200 lens.
Very pleased with the results.

You should check out Ken Rockwells manual on the D80 too. It makes for a great starting point. I also have the Thom Hogan one, which is better, but the Rockwell one is free.

Does Jeremy Royle still fly from Andrewsfield? Haven't seen him for years. If you know him say hi from me. If my name doesn't quite ring a bell with him, mention amateur radio and SSTV. He'll know what that means
