Question Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 AF and the Tamron SP AF 17-50MM F/2.8 XR Di II

Can someone tell me what the difference is between these two lenses and which one would be the best one to buy? I am looking to buy one for a portrait lens and I would also like to know if it would fit a Nikon D100 body??

Thanks in advance for all your HELP!!!

Yes they'll both fit on the D100 body.

The Di II is the newer version of the lens and Di is Tamron's designation for digital. Similar to Nikon's DX designation so I don't believe you could use the lens on a FF camera body. I believe there's low dispersion glass in this one as well as an extra coating to reduce ghosting and flare. ON a D100, D200, or D300, the Di II would be the one to get if you have a choice between them.

being a pedant...

they are the same lens. the second name is the full and complete name of the lens. the first name is what all of us lazy typists call it.

the tamron 17-50 f2.8 is a digital only lens. this gives it the Di II part of the name. the XR indicates special glass that tamron calls Extra Refractive Index Glass. i am sorry i forget what the SP stands for, i think its super performance or like that.

Also, to add to some confusion perhaps, Tamron has just announced a version of this lens for Nikon with a built-in focusing motor. I don't think it is available for sale yet, but I wonder how it will be marked to distinguish it from the earlier (current) version?
