Capture One Pro or Aperture. Knowing what platform you're interested in wouldn't hurt anything.

Take a look at the new Aperture -- it's supposed to be pretty good for shooting tethered.

Capture One Pro or Aperture.
I don't recall either being compatible with shooting Nikons tethered.

Your only choice is Nikon Camera Control Pro (now in version 2.0).

I used Capture One years ago with a Nikon D1X and it worked and Aperture 2 supports shooting tethered with all cameras for which it will process the files. It's brand new.

I have camera control pro 2.0 on a mac g5 and it's much too slow which is why I'm looking for something else. For me, the speed negates any advantage to shooting tethered. It's quicker for me to take several test shots and then run to my computer to look at them in Aperture.

I'll check out Aperture 2.0. We have it on order.

when i said working, i did not say it would satisfy my requirements completely

i did the math with the d200 and the wt3-a

shooting raw, wt3 being 10mb/s
15 MB, 1 MB pser sec = 15 secs
loading into lightroom 5 sec

total 20 sec

The D300 tethered is a tad faster, but not by much.

All connected to an macbook pro (intel cpu)

Shooting tethered this way breaks the rythm of a session, but is usefull in the beginning for evaluating work with/by MUA. Then i loose the cable and of we go

I thought the earlier versions of Nikon Capture supported tethered shooting. I'm almost positive I had a version that did. What happened?

D300 with Camera Control Pro 2, about 3 seconds to full frame on the laptop! The only way to shoot studio! -Jim

Nikon decided it could make an extra $75 off of you if they sold two software packages.

seriously though, I think nikon control is decent but I'm much more concerned about their insistance on getting so high a price for the wireless transciever. It's irksome to me that wireless can cost hundreds when it's not a physically large circuit and can be in a router that cost 50 bucks in total. I cant see why they cant just let me plug a usb router into it and address it as a device.

The wireless devices are targeted at large news organizations covering major sporting events, and theoretically the small USB routers aren't robust enough to transmit from a large packed stadium where Pocket Wizards are sending signals left and right to strobes, remote cameras; fans are on their cell phones; the TV guys are radioing each other; and so on. In practical use though, the expensive solution fails anyways... =)

See the winking smiley? That means I was kidding but thanks for the editorial comments.
But since you brought it up, I've been using macs for creative work since before any of the software you use today was even available for any other platform. So actually, more people today are using pc's for creative work now that the software companies like Adobe have "capitulated". Personally, I never did nor do I now have the need to be "compatible with the masses."

I can see that but I really wasnt talking about that issue. What I meant was that if a simple p&s camera can use a wireless connection to dnld files to my computer then I consider the wireless unit offered by nikon to be a different breed. It's use is primarily for camera control and dnlodng files. An eye-fi card can do the file dnload to a router and these sorts of things are a lot less money. I wouldnt expect them to be great in a stadium though. But I'd like to see a simple wi-fi dongle that I can stick in the usb port of my camera so I can talk to the camera through a network instead of tethered. And thats where a router installed on my notebook or desktop could be seen as a network.

I dont need a '500 dollar 2way Mr. Microphone' . It may be a fine pc of equipment but for me it seems to miss the mark. I'm hoping some third party manufacturer will jump in eventually. I see the nikon offering as a 'pro only' device.

Of course I'm just wishing in one hand and cryin in the other cause I dont expect nikon to listen to me

That was my point. You're not in the target market for their device, and it looks like your SOL for the time being...

I read on another forum that the $15 ToneUpS3 program does this. I plan to check into this since after being REALLY unhappy with CaptureNX I'm not inclined to give Nikon another $75.
