I'd recommend the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8 and the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 (you can get a 2x TC that gives you 600mm reach), unless you have even more money then get the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8, Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 and the Nikon 300 f/2.8 with either a 1.4x or 2x TC.

Here's one I shot today of a Great Blue Heron in the nest with a baby. Sun low on the horizon and image reduced to 600x400 @ 300 dpi for post.
D300, Nikon 300 f/2.8 AF-S VR with Nikon 1.7x teleconverter, 510mm @ f/5.6, ISO 200

Well I am ordering the Camera and a 70 - 300 VR lens to start the system off. The Minolta setup will pay for some lens/lens. I guess With the 70-300 it is a platform to build around. The camera and application will determine what the next choice will be.
I will be looking at a f2.8 portrait lens. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to this forum. I have read them all and lots of reviews oh yes lots of reviews even on you tube. Just when i thought i had a lens picked out i would change it. Kama for all

Well it came on Saturday the D300 and 70-300 VR..
I have posted a couple from the weekend just getting my way around all the features..
