Can these 3 be triggered via wires? I don't want to spend the money right now for PWs for a couple more months but I wanted to play around with a wired version if it can be done. The AB comes with the sync cord and I get how to do it with the camera alone but I am not sure exactly what else I need to add the SB800 to it off camera for like a hair light or background light etc. I have a Wein Safe on camera which I plug the AB into and the SB800 would get plugged into where?? and with what cord?? Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure you can trigger the Alien Bee using the built-in optical slave. Connect your sync cord to the SB-800, and don't connect anything to the AB800. The light from the SB-800 should trigger the AB800.

D80 flash in commander mode, triggers the SB 800, which fires the AB 800 optically.

I'd be worried about the preflashes from the pop-up flash and SB-800, but if it works...

Okay I just tried it with the SB800 on camera to see if it would fire the AB and IT WORKED!!! Wow! I have never done this before and think it is the neatest thing since sliced bread! One problem, I think, is that I was using the Wein Safe Sync and the SB800 is a little loose on the hot shoe anyway but when I used it with the WSS every wiggle it made triggered the AB off. It didn't trigger the AB when I took the WSS off and just had the SB800 directly in the camera hot shoe. I am assuming that when I get that little adapter cord for the SB800 I can use the WSS on camera and plug the adapter into that right?? It shouldn't fire it off so easily then right? Actually I got to thinking and maybe it was because it was in "A" mode instead of "M".....hmmm....
One more thing is that the pop up flash did NOT go off. I never use that one anyway so I think maybe I had it shut off already.... Thanks again in advance. |

the on-board flash isn't used for exposure when in commander mode. It is only used to provide information to the wireless flashes.
