Default Using TTL mode

I've got a D50 and a Speedlight SB-80DX, but I can't get it to sync up in TTL mode. Shutter won't fire. Am I doing something wrong here or is that flash not compatible with the D50. Thanks!
RC

I don't think TTL works with the D50 and that flash. Try the flash in Auto and see if it fires when you trip the shutter. I think the D50 is only fully compatible (iTTL) with the SB-600 and SB-800.

Yeah, I've been shooting in Manual mode with it for a while. Just wondering if it would work in TTL. Thanks!

The SB-80DX predates the D50, and is incompatible in TTL mode.

The SB 80 DX is a D-TTL flash and I believe he D50 uses the newer i-TTL

The flash should work in "A" or "M" modes.

Yup, the D50 doesn't support d-TTL.. only i-TTL. You'll need a d70 or better to use a d-TTL flash the way it was intended.

Actually, the D70 doesn't support D-TTL either.

The D2 bodies (H, X, and their S versions) maintained D-TTL compatibility so that D1/H/X users could continue to use their flashes, but I doubt many people still use D-TTL flashes if they own an i-TTL capable camera, as i-TTL offers a significant improvement over D-TTL. I've only seen one shooter not go to the SB-600/800 flashes for her i-TTL camera.

The D3 doesn't list D-TTL as supported but I've read/heard reports that it is still D-TTL compatible.

Thom mentions that it isn't supported in his review, and it's unusual that he's wrong.

No mention of D-TTL in the manual. Also, I've tried the SB-28DX on top of a D70; no TTL.

Works in A&M mode just checked the manual.
All the new models require i-TTL flashes (d70,d70s,d50,d80 etc)for TTL.
It's the one thing that Nikon did that i hate.
I have numerous after market flashes that i use on manual.
The upside is that the old flashes still work;Cannon needs specific models, and apparently damage can be done to the camera if a non specific flash is used.

Canon rates its hotshoes at a much lower voltage level than Nikon does. All Nikon cameras can withstand up to 250 V of trigger voltage; Canon's sub-$2000 models (and 5D) are rated much lower, something like 12 V? Someone like Max should know... =)

I had that flash for my 5700/8700 Nikons. Then I found out right away it did not work TTL with my D70.

Just something i picked up checking for flashes for the wifes Rebel xti.
Found postings referring to cpu damage from non cannon specific flashes.
I did try one anyways, and it fired when mounted but wouldn't trigger again.
I'm no expert here, but things were much simpler with flash bulbs
