Default 50mm f/1.4 & 35-70mm f/2.8 lens questions

I have two questions about two pre-owned Nikon auto focus lenses that I recently purchased (50mm f/1.4 and 35-70mm f/2.8 zoom).

1. Where is the serial number on these lenses?

2. On the lens barrel of the 35-70mm f/2.8 zoom, there is a small silver push button near the Nikon name. What is its function?

I'm not sure on those two lenses but on some more recent Nikkors the serial number is etched in the black body but in a different place to before - for example on the 18/70 under the "made in Thailand" gold writing. Damned difficult to spot. On my old 75/300 "push/pull" it is even harder to spot and might be the same on your lenses. It is etched in the black right hard against the lens mount between the last knurlings and the mount. Any further and it would be off the lens. It took me 20 mins to find it too since again it is etched black on black in the body. Almost invisible. The old 24/120 is the same. Same again on the 80/200 although there is a gap in the knurlings where it is stamped. At least on the 500 mirror it is in white on the front of the barrel where it is marked "Reflex NIKKOR.C 1:8 f=500 mm 561604". Because you aren't looking for that type of marking though it is easy to overlook it it is so obvious! Hope this helps.

Thanks for the useful information.

All of my other Nikon lenses have large white-on-black numbers located near the Nikon name or near the filter threads. The small black-on-black serial numbers near the base of the lenses were very hard for me to find.
