Dimitri,

How right you are. As long as I have enough light for shooting, I often use this lens. I get overall wonderful results with this. The glass is great, the VR works and the weight makes shooting standing up a pleasure.

Tom

P.S. I also like the 18-135mm, albeit not a VR lens, but the optics are quite good and the price is superb.

The VR is nice for sure. That is the only reason I'd buy this lens though. The maximum aperture of f/4.5 at the wide end really bothers me. It's saddening in a way.. I'm not sure any of the 70/75-300 lenses could satisfy me. I'm still impressed with the tiger shot though

I did just pick up a used 300mm f/4. I can't wait to put it to good use

Great shots!! Thnx for sharing..

I've been looking at he 70-300 VR all over the place and I've found these two:

Without VR Sigma | 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Autofocus Lens | 508306

and this f:/4.5 w/VR: Nikon | 70-300mm f/4-5.6G AF-S VR Autofocus Lens - Black | 2161

I want to get one within the next few months but I dont want to spend a whole lot of money on it. We are going away on vacation in mid July and I want to take this with me. Any comments, or ideas where I can pick up a good glass, seems I really do need VR capable (I was actually thinking of not getting it) and not break the bank? Nikon, Sigma and Tamron or my choices and not in any particular order.

Also, I've seen where these less expensive glass doesn't take the Tele Converters. Is this true, also my 18-135mm Kit Lens cant take the Converters either.

You'll find that practically none of the variable aperature zooms will take teleconverters. And you wouldn't want to have them on there anyway. Teleconverters degrade the image quality. Also, you'd lose autofocus ability beyond f/8 or so on most DSLRs. So if you were to put a 2x teleconverter on a constant f/4 lens, you now have an f/8 lens at it's widest open aperature.

I have the Nikon 70-300 VR and am very happy with the results. As for a teleconverter a Kenko 1.4 will work. The Nikon teleconverter will not as the lens extends too far into their mount. I have only tried the tele once and had resonably good shots. If you have plenty of light, no problem.

The 70-300mm VR is little more than any other kit lens, but sometimes that is all one wants to get er done. I have used and enjoyed my copy.

Is it much better than the older 70-300 G? I thought about going and grabbing one of the new VR versions for vacation use. I bet that lens would be great for travel, especially when I want to travel light.... well... lighter... but I'm concerned about using it on the D3 as there is a difference in using the lens on an FX sensor. I'm sure it's pretty good on a D300, but I'm also certain there'll be visible light falloff in the corners with the D3. I'm wondering about CA as well on the FX sensor.

Anyone comment on those aspects on a D3?

Julio

I'm very happy with my 70-300VR but wouldn't exactly call it light or good for travel. In fact that's the main down side with it is that I rarely carry it with me. When traveling (as in really walking or trains, not sitting in a car) I don't take more than the 55-200. Yes a much more limited lens, but I'm trying to enjoy my walk/vacation and not be a pack mule!
