Hope this isn't old news as I don't follow Nikon much.
Anyway, here they are. Oh and a bunch of lenses too. __________________

They are NOT out.
They have been announced. Won't be "available" until November. It is a typical Nikon-Canon reaction to each other announcing stuff, like new bodies. Canon announces the D40, so Nikon follows suit immediately. To me, it just shows that both of them are really "sitting" on these new bodies until the time is right, then boom. The D3 will be capable of shooting at 11fps (9fps with AF tracking). Be a 14-bit jobbie too. Sounds like a typical "Anything you can do, we can do" kind of story. They only compete with themselves, and not so much for the public. |

Well, at first take, these are some good introductions from Nikon.
The D200 seems to get a little boost, though I'm not sure about the Lo-1 mode... I rather enjoy shooting at ISO 100 and it would have been nice to have ISO 50 but I'm not throwing stones at this point. Of course, we need to wait and see how these cameras perform, but if they do what we believe they'll do, then I'm one that will be in line for the D300. For one, the higher number of cross sensor AF points will be welcomed with open arms as far as I'm concerned. When shooting portraits in the studio, how nice will live view be? People have been jumping up and down for self cleaning sensor units. Now we have it. Now that the D300 can be taken to 8 fps with the battery grip, sport shooters will, I believe, welcome the camera. Six fps is nothing to slouch at either. I know there will be naysayers out there, but I tell you folks... I see and continue to see many many shooters with D200's slung over their shoulders at all kinds of events. I don't normally shoot sports, but at the two bowls that I shot at this last year there were D200's slung over the shoulders of many photographers. Some were backups to D2xs but others were not. The D200 sold in a big way. I suspect the D300 is the evolution of the camera, with the addition of a couple of megapixels, some speed to bring it to a larger market segment, better AF system to appeal to a wider variety of pro, semi-pro, and advanced amateurs and market it as a budget pro camera. Good marketing. I'm very excited about the announcement and the new models. Now, I still don't believe I'll be in line for the new D3 but a couple of D300's is very much a possibility and I will absolutely be taking a look at the 24-70 f/2.8 (don't you want to say "L") LOL The 400 f/2.8 with VR is also very exciting and will be on the radar for me. It's just going to be further out as the other tools will be much more useful for what I do at the present time. Good news my fellow Nikon shooters!!! Julio Home |

With all the improvements, more fps, etc., if the battery life is as good as the D-200, that by golly ought to be good enough. If one doesn't want to buy these cameras because they only get 300 or 500 shots from the battery, then they got issues. I suppose if the battery was twice the size, and twice the weight naturally, that would be a good thing? I'd think not.

![]() Seriously, I bet Canon users are more excited about the news than Nikonians themselves. One should have a look at the celebrations going on in Canon section of DPR. I'm, as a Canon user, very excited about the news. |

We, Nikonians, should show some mercy to those Canonians...
They already know they went a wrong brand... Do not rebuke them too harshly! I am going to forgive them some sins, cos they jealous to death! But, in real life, both brands are equal now, with some new Nikkors as a factor of little victory so far! Dimitri. |

To me, the best part of the announcements are the two new pro wide andle zooms. These are no longer DX lenses and Nikon has needed these for a long time. I still wish they had announced a 17mm or 18mm to 70mm f/2.8 zoom rather than a 24mm, but the 24mm is much better than yesterday's Nikon selection.
I think the two new bodies are great, but I plan to wait until these go through puberty. I suspect the second offerings, perhaps next calendar year might be mature offerings most capable of being bought, used and kept for longer periods of time. These new bodies are just a bit too new sounding for current ownership and 12mp v 10mp does very little for me. I would like a 1:1 viewfinder, good remote capabilities and extremely low noise generation to say ISO 1,600. The one potentially exciting technological advancement may be the sensor cleaner....this could blow the Giotto Rocket away. My two cents and nonsense, Tom |

I don't know if you are saying you are excited about the Nikon news, or the Canon news. if it is the later, better go join their party. The only way the new Canon bodies beat the new Nikon bodies is in the name on the front, and that is just because people have a piss poor perception of what is good when they read the label. I noticed the nice ad Canon has in some magazines about the new MkIII being the "worlds fastest DSLR". neat. Too bad they need to retract that comment for upcoming ad layouts. |
