It depends what you want. The D3 is the high speed version, basically a D2H replacement, and the D3x will be the "quality" high pixel density version. If you want the high speed, no need to wait.
Exactly.

D3 = 1D mkIII = sport

D3x = 1Ds mkIII = highres

D300 = 40D + 5D (hehehe)
