One would assume that Sony is quite capable of producing anything anybody else can...

That I don't know. I don't know if Nikon has the facilities to produce sensors. But at least they aren't buying someone else's product of the shelf, even if they are outsourcing the manufacturing.

Buying them from Sony worked for the D-200

Yeah, it worked OK, but there are those that were concerned about Nikon relying on Sony to provide sensors to a competitor. I, for one, didn't think that Sony would pull the plug on Nikon, it didn't make good business sense to me. But, there has been a lot of speculation since the Alpha came out.
As far as I'm concerned, as long as the performance is there, I don't care where the parts come from.

They look great. I hear them calling me back .... but I don't trust Nikon enough yet [again].

Damm sweet and more advanced than the Canons I'm waiting on, but let's face it, who wants a non focusing 1Dmk3 and NO AF in live view?

I'm waiting for a major price drop in Mamiya med format. I hope the sales from CAS and NAS propel Mamiya digital prices downward.

I think after three year of apprentice work with the D70 and D80 I am now worthy of the D300. The price seems fair. Now I know what to ask Santa for Christmas! -Jim

Jim, good luck with Santa. I like the old guy. He uses a Canon by the way. Unfortunately he still meters for shadow.

Of course they are, that's what business is all about. Pictures of the PCB indicate the D300 was produced in May 2007 (at least parts of it). Releasing it at a time that would knock the wind out of Canon's sails is just common sense.

And hey, look, coming into the xmas buying season. Do you think it's a coincidence the cameras are being announced and released at the end of the year?

Nikon has proven to my satisfaction that they are customer-focused when it comes to camera design. That they're also business-focused when it comes to making sales and timing releases should come as no surprise to anyone.

It's the same in any industry. Microsoft lowers the X360 price and Sony's price miraculously comes down four weeks later.

Now, here's hoping I get that D3 for xmas. =D

yeeehaw.. I'm happy about two things:

The D3 masking the viewfinder for DX lenses. It may only be shooting 6mp images but that's still a lot more than Canon can do. I'm just glad Nikon shooters don't have be 'scared' to buy "digital" lenses

The d300 is out.. thus the d200 drops in price sooner or later. I should finally be able to afford one!

The biggest thing that makes me consider a d300 over the d200 is the new AF, with the 15 cross-type's and the 51 total points. That's pretty freakin' amazing. Otherwise I will happily spend the money to buy an 'outdated' d200 when the time comes

Hey folks,

Canon will innovate. Why I heard they might remove RAW mode from their pro cameras just to show you how up-to-the-minute they really are.

You know Nikon will announces the D3x and D300x by early 2008. If you are planning to buy, I would wait.

And about that same time frame, Canon will announce they stole some other camera manufacturers innovation and put it on their cameras........

I know what to expect from a D3x, basically more pixels, but what are they going to do to the D300 for the "x" designation?
It depends what you want. The D3 is the high speed version, basically a D2H replacement, and the D3x will be the "quality" high pixel density version. If you want the high speed, no need to wait.

To me, it just shows that both of them are really "sitting" on these new bodies until the time is right, then boom.

The D3 will be capable of shooting at 11fps (9fps with AF tracking). Be a 14-bit jobbie too. Sounds like a typical "Anything you can do, we can do" kind of story. They only compete with themselves, and not so much for the public.

No, not correct, 40D (not D40) was announced two days earlier than these two cameras.

Nikon invited several photographers for this event a long time ago (read weeks), so Nikon had been planning this for a long time, it is actually Canon that did the move and released their 40D first to steal some of the attention from the D300 and D3 announcement.
