Impressive specs. Does anyone know who makes the sensor? And I take it that this is still the 1.5x crop factor?

Clearly Nikon is simply turning its back on full frame. It's really a pity, too, since those old Nikon lenses like the 85mm f/1.4 really come to life on the type of camera they were built for. I'm sorry to see Nikon stick with these 1.5x sensor cameras.

I think the D200 will do well (especially if it's priced right). There are many DX (1.5x) fans out there and it should be a fine platform, especially for tele work. If the reviews and field performance support what initially appears to be an impressive camera, the D200 could expand it's marketshare even further in the 20D/5D space (prosumer/pro).

Canon's answer will come in early 2006.*

Personally I think it looks great, which is why I posted it here. Though I love my Oly E-1, it's nice to see other 'smaller frame' cameras with large MPs out there. Specs look very good.

Any indication of potential cost?

Hi:

On the contrary. Nikon will almost certainly have a FF offering at a later date. You can't do it all and do it well. They are taking advantage of all the R&D that goes into the 1.5x sensors. The D2x clearly shows that this is a viable system for all but the most hell bent wide angle pros doesn't it? *

It would be foolish and costly for Nikon to retool just cuz Canon does. They do not have the funds that Canon does. Canon's FF offering at 1500 more than the price quoted for the D200(2k) is really a camera with a lot of limitations. The D200, if the spec and pics are to be believed is a much nicer camera IMHO for most applications.

Lets see how it handles 1600ISO

(my first post here so please be kind!)

wow... a spell check!
Cheers

Hi, Craig. Welcome to the board.

I guess there is something to be said for Nikon's consistency in the crop-factor area. My biggest complaint is that the lens ranges are now all messed up with the cropped sensors. The 85 used to be a perfect portrait lens. Now it's often too long.

I think you're spot on with your analysis - there is definitely life left in the DX format. I think it shows Nikon have the guts to stick to their principles. Oh and welcome to PhotoCamel - I hope you can stick around .

I dont understand what limitations does the 5D have? I think it's pretty cool. I'm sure this new nikon is cool too but how do you know if it is without limitations?

"full frame" or what ever are just man made sizes. I'd argue the 1.5 crop of the nikos is full frame... its nikon Dslr Full frame...

Saying something is bad cuse its not FF i, could just say come on canon where my medium format full frame...

BTW on Price i heard £1750 being bandied about

Nikon's 1.5 "full frame" would be fine if it weren't for the fact, as Albert says, that the majority of Nikon's lens lengths were made with a different sized imaging apparatus in mind. Sure, if like Olympus Nikon had redesigned all of their lenses to "match" the current sensor, then I doubt there would be an issue here at all.

Hi:

I agree.... it is cool!

I admit there is a bit of speculation here but my guess would be that at $1,500 less that the 5D the D200 will have better 1) speed (at least at a reduced mp which is a nice feature for action shooters of all types), 2) flash capabilities, and likely 3) focusing (this remains to be seen).

Don't get me wrong though. The 5D is a great camera and I really hate the Canon v Nikon thing. The 5D is just expensive as it is the first of its kind. Firsts are almost always expensive.

And, to say it has limitations is not really correct. I agree with you. It is a great landscape/portrait camera. I'd certainly choose something else for sports or birds (Nikon or Canon). Maybe it is just that the Camera does what it does and all cameras have "limitations"...you just pick the ones you want to live with.

Nonetheless, I think most folks ( especially amateurs on a budget like me) would choose to live with the D200 (as advertised) rather than the 5D. It will do more things really well for less $$.

PS Thanks all for the welcome!!

Cheers,
Craig Ryder

Hi:

That is a real problem. Folks who carefully selected, bought, and learned to work with a certain group of lenses for FF are in no-man's land.

I can see how they feel left behind bt Nikon in a way.

I persinally prefer cropped cameras over FF. As a birder and wildlife shooter the extra reach for "free" is a geat benefit!
