I noticed it on Nikon's site yesterday but didn't download the update yet. Should probably give it a go sometime soon. Thanks Max. =)

Gave it a quick play: runs great, images load faster, and adjustments are faster too. NX's finally getting somewhere close to where it should be... now all Nikon needs to do is give up on the control points and toss it in free with every camera.

Michael,
What are the pros and cons of using Capture NX as opposed to just using CS3 or PSE 5.0, soon to be 6.0?

Thanks for the assessment.
Tom

Pros: Color. I have yet to get consistently good color output using ACR in Photoshop CS (any version) or Elements. Capture NX's color with Nikon files is second to none, as it should be, given that it is the camera manufacturer's (should-come-with-the-camera) RAW converter.

I'd put up samples but I'm having some color management issues (I resize and edit using Photoshop as NX's other tools are not particularly intuitive to me) with color spaces not converting correctly, so the one big advantage is lost in the display. Will get back to you with samples soon... I'm pretty much down to "Reinstall Photoshop" as the "convert to" command seems to be busted.

Cons: Capture NX costs a bit of money, and it tries too hard to compete with Photoshop Elements. The control points are a good idea but overall implementation sucks, and until 1.1 it was unbearably slow even on stud computers. Between individual edits one could get coffee, make lunch, chat up someone of the opposite sex, maybe even get to the second date before the process finished.

Have they put some reasonable keyboard shortcuts in the new versions? It makes me insane that, at least on the demo, the reflexes I've honed over a decade of Windows use are useless in CNX. ALT-F-S = SAVE THE FILE in every single Windows app in the universe, but not in CNX!

Bloody annoying.

I quite like the u-points though, when it comes to playing with skies and colour tweakery I've been completely satisifed with CNX.
