Seems there is no TC that can be used with this lens?? Hard to believe -- I sure missed the boat on this one. Now the prices are making sense. Too bad.

Not hard to believe. You probably don't want to be using a teleconverter with a lens with a variable max aperture of f/4.5-5.6. The TC-14E, even, will take you to f/8, which is pushing the limits of autofocus even more (f/5.6 already is, to some extent). Also, due to the degredation inherent with the use of TC's, you won't be doing anything to help optimize your image quality. The fast telephotos have the use of TC's factored into the design phase, and therefore can take the teleconverters with minimal degredation, but even then, you're still reducing the quality of your final image.

Teleconverters should really be used with fast, fixed aperature lenses.
The 70-300 VR starts out at f/4.5 and is a variable aperature lens, by full extension you're at f/5.6 I don't think you'd really want to try a teleconverter on this lens. *As I've said many times before, "Unfortunately, there are very few inexpensive ways to go beyond 300 or 400mm." Julio |

Actually, if you go to Dpreview or Nikonians you will see a lot of people are using the Kenko 1.4x Pro Dg tele with your lens, and are getting very good results. If you read the threads they say it auto-focus's fast and the VR works perfect. You can find the Kenko on line for about $130 dollars.
