It's Nikon's best lens.
No, really, over the course of my career I've used and/or edited images from just about every major Nikon lens (current and otherwise), and the 300mm VRII is the best Nikkor lens I've ever seen. Yes, it's better than the 200mm f/2.0. The 300mm f/2.8 is sharper. Optically it's more or less the same than the original VR model, slightly updated with VRII and faster focusing (though really not that much faster). The original VR was an update of the excellent f/2.8D AF-S and AF-S II models, which were awesome lenses in their own right. Takes any teleconverter reasonably well. Works well with both the TC-14E/E II 1.4x and TC-17E II 1.7x. Even works okay with the TC-20E and E II, which were pretty lousy teleconverters with just about every lens except the 300mm f/2.8 AF-S models. Likely to work magic with the TC-20E III, though I have not personally tested this combination at this time. I'm sure I will have the opportunity at some point. The TC-20E III has some sort of "magic" in it, likely the aspherical element, that allows it to mate with numerous lenses and still produce sharp results. I have a detailed review here; mostly copied from my original VR model review, but the lenses are so similar: AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II - Reviews by PhotoCamel Members |

looks like the mk3 2Xtc could defo get me a useable 600mm (with extra portability) and mated to the D800 I could crop away to my hearts content. Looking good for a switch from Canon ![]() Many thanks for taking the time to reply Cheers Rob |

I think you need to go here.
Lens Evaluations I would disagree vehemently that the 300 f1:2.8 is better than the 200 f1:2.0G. There are many examples out there to back that conjuncture. |

The 300 Vs 200 is mute for me - I need a 300, plus t/c's and possibly a D800 to aid a bit of focal length cropping.
However, it is great to see nikon doing great lenses at different fl's as it gives one confidence that Nikon glass will do the job. Thanks all for taking the time to reply Cheers R __________________
