Default Looking for a lense

Hi all

I am looking for a 18 to 200 lense new or second hand (so long as the second hand is in good working order)

Been looking at the Tamron and Sigma lenses

If the price is right I will take it

I live in South Africa

Kind regards

Tannith

I have used the Sigma and the Nikon. The Nikon is by far the better lens and was the one I ended up buying.

The Tamron appears to be very similar to the Sigma in the tests/reviews that I have seen. These also say that the Nikon lens is much superior to either.

It really comes down to what you want to pay. The Nikon is about double the price of the other two. Mine is my "standard" lens, rarely coming off the camera, the vast majority of my photographs are taken through that lens. It was difficult to justify NOT spending the extra money on what is clearly the superior lens out of that three.

I do not have or need an 18 to 200mm lens, but based on the feedback from colleagues who do, I would not hesitate recommending the Nikon 18-200.

As a side note, I recently purchased a great DVD (The Bang Bang Club) about the real-life drama of the four South African combat photojournalists (Greg Marinovich, Joao Silva, Ken Oosterbroek, and Kevin Carter) who documented the end of apartheid in South Africa.

I once owned the Sigma 18-200 OS and sold it in favor of the Nikon 18-200 VR and never looked back!!! If you can swing a deal, get the Nikon!!!

Is this a want to buy thread? Cause that's what it looks like. Or are you asking for opinions between the two?

or keh .

18-200 from nikon is good , the sigma 18-200 os seems to be good too, i don't know the tammy 18-200 (i know the 28-200 because i have that too, but then agian i have more than 1 digital body and one analogue and one humanus ..

i my self have looked at the 18-200 too , and tried it out , but needed one with a better wroking vr so i ended up using the shorter zoom 18-105 dx ed vr II (most if my photography ends with 105mm)

goodluck

I must disagree with you there Dirk; the 18 - 200 from Nikon is VERY good

I was at my local agricultural show today - one lens only, guess which one ?

The Nikon 18-200mm superzoom is regarded very well... for a superzoom. Perhaps the best of the bunch if settling for the compromises inherent in a 10x zoom lens are acceptable.

But don't forget that it is in fact a 10x zoom, and compares poorly to even an inexpensive 3x zoom.
