Default D70 high speed flash sync

I was curious how my old D70 functioned with some old speedlights I have.

Used with Metz 45CT-5 it syncs to 1/8000 but not perfectly. Up to 1/4000 everything works just fine but at 1/8000 I get about 1 stop underexposure. I suspect the shutter is shorter than the flash duration. Winder mode works ok but the flash power seems to be between 5 and 6 stops less than a full power burst.

Used with a Metz 45CL-4 the camera also syncs to 1/8000 but a 1 stop underexposure happens at 1/4000 and 2 stops at 1/8000. This flash will emit much shorter bursts at manual 1/2 and 1/4 power and the underexposure at 1/8000 is not as evident, but the GN goes down accordingly.

The camera also syncs to 1/8000 with a Vivitar 285 HV, however I notice a one stop underexposure at 1/8000.

The exif data is still attached.

1st photo is at 1/500
2nd photo is at 1/1000
3rd photo is at 1/2000
3rd photo is at 1/4000
4th photo is at 1/8000
5th photo is the camera and CT-5 flash used for the above photos.

Sorry for them being not separated but I cant's see how to separate attachments.

Default Re: D70 high speed flash sync

I liked my D70 for fill flash as it had the electronic shutter. If I recall it went up to a flash sync of 1/500th of a second.

Nikon advertised 1/500 but in reality the D70 (and the D40) can x-sync at shutter speeds greater than advertised, because of the electronic shutter.
