If the subject has lots of hair sticking out the extraction becomes a pain.

Not with some of the new masking techniques and plugins. It's amazing what can be done now that was painstakingly difficult only a few years ago.

Actaully not! The software was automated to remove green (can be changed) . they had a model and he hair masked perfectly! Was very impressive.

If you are trying to mask hair with a similar coloured backdrop yourself yes it's quite tough

Great job of explaining the ratio.

Another easy solution of your problem with the standard sizes: you move to Europe! Here we have standard sizes of 20x30 cm (8x12) etc.

Does anyone have experience how mask fine blond hair (not the platinum kind, more the average darker blond) automatically with good results, specially if there are many single strands flying around? Perhaps a tutorial?

My results were always less than satisfactory - either I had a colour cast on the edge of the hair or single hairs were cut apart - and I'm still looking for a solution.

If you use CS5 have a look here. Several videos on creating difficult masks.

i'll mostly print in 10x 15 cm for that a minimum resolution of 3.2 MP is enough
since the least used compact has 6mp that is alsmost double the required size.

and yes i know that 3:2 is ccommon with nikon as well as snoy and pentax.

A 10x15cm print (6"x4") even at 300ppi only requires 1800x1200 pixels which is 2.16Mp You'll get perfectly acceptable prints at even less - 1.5Mp should be enough for a perfectly fine 15x10cm print.

Regards ratio,
3:2 ratio is common for most DSLRs
4:3 ratio is more common for most compacts (as well as the Oly 4/3rds dslr system)
