Default Florida's Gopher Tortoise
These guys are very important to Florida's Sandhill and Scrub Habitats. They tunnel deep underground and their old homes become home to many other Florida animal species such as the Indigo Snake, Florida Mouse, as well as many other endangered species. Their burrows also provide safety during Florida's wildfires. Here he is.

I'm not familiar with these tortoises..We have big and VERY big desert tortoises here...Is this guy the size of a salad plate or a dinner plate?

They are about 12 inches long as an adult. Not sure what kind of plate that is. They can weight up to 9 pounds or so. This guy was definitely on the big end of the scale. These guys burrow up to 30 feet underground.
