I'm not an expert on US butterflies but it looks like a Spicebush Swallowtail, Papilio troilus.

You know, I think you may have to come over here — I googled Papilio troilus, and I think this may actually be a pipevine swallowtail, Battus philenor. The spicebush swallowtail has a different pattern of dots along the edge of the lower wings (in the pictures I found).

Told you I wasn't an expert! I have to admit something was worrying me about the hind wing markings when I made the post. Now I know. Philenor is a distasteful model; troilus is a palatable mimic.
