Lovely. Doesn't look like the sort of butterfly I'd expect to see in London, though.

Nice capture Steve
![]() Do you know the name of it? I also agree about a crop... it would enhance the detail of the butterfly. ~Kelly ![]() |

If you can lure Steve (African Butterflies) in here from the macro forum, he can probably ID it without needing to check any references.

I'm not an expert on US butterflies but it looks like a Spicebush Swallowtail, Papilio troilus. All the best Steve |

Not an expert on US butterflies? I guess that means that after you finish photographing all the butterflies of Africa, you'll be headed this way.

You know, I think you may have to come over here — I googled Papilio troilus, and I think this may actually be a pipevine swallowtail, Battus philenor. The spicebush swallowtail has a different pattern of dots along the edge of the lower wings (in the pictures I found).

Told you I wasn't an expert! I have to admit something was worrying me about the hind wing markings when I made the post. Now I know. Philenor is a distasteful model; troilus is a palatable mimic. All the best Steve __________________
