The REAL Blinky...

This is my namesake Blinky, the one eyed green tree frog, God rest his soul. My son caught him on our porch in the Spring of 1999 and, on account of his missing eye and the fact that our property is constantly patrolled by red shouldered hawks, we decided to build a terrarium and keep him. He died last June, just stopped eating. He was part of the family, we miss him.

We're pretty sure the missing eye is a result of a birth defect. Such defects are occurring ever more frequently in amphibians in developed areas. Salamanders seem particularly hard hit, we find one or two a year with some sort of obvious defect... usually something malformed or missing.

I shot this with a Coolpix 5000 through the terrarium glass with ambient light.
