Default The beauty of the night - Closeups of Night Flowers with the LX3

I have had the Panasonic LX3 for over two months now, and it still amazes me with it's ability to capture the shots I want with no fuss and with the quality I expect with my Nikon D300 and expensive Nikkor glass.

I have been frustrated with my inability to get quality macro or close up shots since moving to a Nikon D300 DSLR. I have found that macros are not as good as a small sensor mainly due I think to the small depth of field. You can get them but it is a lot of work.

The LX3 does a fantastic job for me as a second camera, I can now get the closeup and macro shots I want with ease. The sharpness and clarity are better than any I have gotten with the DSLR.

Images were shot with a Panasonic Lumix LX3, Manual mode, 1/1000 sec, F8, on board Flash, 80 and 100 ISO, and Macro On.

Some samples
This beautiful cactus Cereus peruvianus, or Cereus uruguayanus has columns of 12 to 14' in height, (3.5 to 4.5 Meters) and may have many buds, but each bud will only bloom for one night. Opening rapidly as darkness descends, the bloom attracts the necessary ants and insects for pollination, and as the dawn breaks it closes and shrivels, falling off during the day following.

The bud, ready to open the next night

And another kind of cactus. Night blooming perfumed cactus. Sometimes referred to as Cereus hexagonus, and commonly called "Lady of the Night". Additional classification is Epiphyllum hookeri. Other common names are Climbing Cactus and Hooker's Orchid Cactus

And a Crucifix Orchid, not night blooming but also taken in the dark.

Thanks Gautam, glad you liked them. I was really pleased with the out of camera results, most are only cropped to size. Phil

Thanks Bill, the flowers are simply stunningly beautiful and so delicate. I went out 15 min after sun up this morning and they were already closing and declining.

Some of these are very nice. A tad oversharpened maybe?

Well cactii are supposed to be 'Sharp' guess I took it literally eh?

Apart from a tad of sharpening in PP, they were as shot.. at most they were at +2. Personal preferences I guess, thanks JDArt for the comment and suggestion, I will do some comparisons, which one do you think is overdone? I will maybe post one of each to see.

Phil
