Default Snowflakes

I haven't had much time for photography lately, but I did make time yesterday to try a few snowflake shots. It was just amazing looking at them up close.

Yup, excellent shot, this is how they actually look like, amazing how some people have depicted them in drawings, without realising that is how they look like

I'm SO jealous. I want to take photos like this! Do you have any advice for me?

Thanks everybody. Athena, you are too kind. I have seen your beautiful work.

I took these by sticking a piece of blue craft foam on a table outside in the snow. I used a 105mm macro lens and 2 extension tubes (32mm total) and my flash. At first I tried capturing individual snowflakes but just did not have the skill to make them look good. So, I waited for a little snow to start piling up, and then just planted my elbows on the table and ever so slightly moved the lens around trying to find an interesting flake that was sticking up. It was way more luck than skill for sure.

I would love to see your snowflake captures!

wow - I have that level of magnification. I have a 100mm macro lens and two extension tubes. I thought this sort of image was beyond my reach. We do have some snow outside, but it is not fresh. It's a bit worse for wear actually. Would this still work?

It can't hurt to try. I tried some the day after the snow fell too, but it had gotten much colder overnight, and I just found it harder to hold still and concentrate, and the flakes were not as loose. I did scoop some very gently and just kind of flipped the foam sheet around trying to separate the flakes a bit and it worked, but it was just much harder that day for me. I guess there might be a lot of variables, but hopefully you can still get something!

I just went outside and tried my hand at it (and froze my hands too!). I think what I have here is better referred to as ice, rather than snow. lol I might need to wait for some new snow so there will actually be flakes.

Yes very good captures! I tried this the other day also when it was snowing and the flakes were beautiful-I just couldn't get any keepers. I will have to try that foam board thing. I was thinking what I could use but tried my red coat but besides the snow I also got the fabric, which took away from what I wanted. Also the flash is a great idea. I'm going to keep at it. Thanks for the tips
