Default Extension tubes?

How many of you use extension tubes for macro work? I understand this can be done, but I would like to know why or when one would choose an extension tube rather than a true macro lens. Thank you.

extension tubes are used with a macro lens to increase magnification.
most macro lens only give x1 mag, which is not enough to show good deatail in most subjects.
extension tubes will double mag to x2 when used with a macro lens of around 100mm.
when used with a standard lens it shortens the focus distance therefor increasing magnification.
here is a shot taken with 18-55 standard zoom @50mm with a 12mm kenko extension tube added, focus distance about 4 inch

Just to add to Phil's reply, you can use extension tubes on normal lenses eg a 50mm lens to get to 1:1 magnification of a standard prime macro lens or use them on longer lenses to get just that bit closer. I certainly use them a lot on both macro lenses and a 200mm lens. Main disadvantage using them on a lens is simply the loss of infinity focus.

Yep very handy item to have.
They are also a relatively cheap way to get into macro photography, as said you can use them pretty much behind any lens, although I have always found that the combination of a good 50mm lens and tubes to be very versatile.
