I have new found interest in macro photography. I have the 100 f/2.8 and Canon MR-14 macro ring flash. Unfortunately, I really don't have a clue how to use the ring flash. Used point and shoots my whole life until 23 months back when I got my first dslr. My interest is mainly landscape and I have never used a flash before. Starting from the ground no doubt. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Using flash with macro is normally done with the camera in Manual mode with setting such as ISO100, F11, 1/200th and the flash in ETTL mode. With a macro flash like this it is then normal to vary the power level between the heads say 2:1 to 4:1 to stop the lighting looking flat. If you get overexposure doing this you may need to set the FEC either on the camera or the flash unit to a -ve value say from -.66 to - 1.3. The difficult thing with these flashes is diffusing them to prevent blown highlights.

Thanks Brian. And that is exactly the problem I am having (overexposure). Well, and also lacking a basic insight into flash photography. But the overexposure is the source of my immediate frustrations. I will try the above suggestions and see what happens. Thanks.
