Thanks for the comments Yannis and TB.
Done with some luck and knowledge of what was happening. Female hovers go into a fairly static hover for a few seconds whilst they examine the plant for aphids to lay their eggs next to. So it was a case of waiting a little while for it to get into a suitable position and then take some shots. The hard part apart from focusing was trying to keep it in frame . Managed 3 good shots out of a sequence of 7 I took - another one below.brian V. ![]() |

Truly amazing photo of the hoverfly
Though this is my thought, I would of loved to have seen the shutter speed be a bit slower, so as to get some motion on the wings |

![]() 400D user - getting some wing action is more about angle in hover shots. You are much more likely to see some in head-on or behind views.The effective shutter speed is the flash duration and that is not fast enough to get anywhere near stopping the wing motion. I was actually a bit luckier in the last shot where I caught the wings at the top of the upstroke and you can see some ![]() You can see what I mean in the other hover shot. Brian V. ![]() ![]() |
