Default Aphid

Here's a shot of an Aphid, or at least I think it's an Aphid, we shot today. If this is something else, would someone please let us know... it's certainly a toothy critter.

This was fun... although having this guy in your tree certainly isn't fun for the tree! They chow!

Honestly, it could be some form of weevil but I'm just not sure about the identification on this one.

Nikon D300, 105 f/2.8 Micro, 5T and 6T diopter filters. Two AB400 strobes.

Julio

Nice capture- does look like a weevil to me- certainly not an aphid.

Definitely looks like a weevil to me. Isn't that 105mm VR a great lens! I do have a calibrated monitor and there's lots of detail in the white. Well done.

Thank you!

The 105 VR is an excellent lens. All of the Nikkor Micro lenses are superb. I miss the 200 f/4 Micro a lot.

I cheated a bit too. The DOF is super shallow here because I was using the 5T and 6T Nikon diopter filters stacked.

How do the 5T and 6T diopter filters work? Are they multi-element? What sort of magnification were you getting? That weevil didn't look too tiny.

I am battling to get good IQ on ultra closeups using the 105mm Micro VR. I use a reversed 28-105mm zoom-Nikkor with Kenko extension tubes to get up to 6:1 on the sensor, but the IQ ain't as good as my friend Jeremy gets with a Canon and an MP-E 65 (like Lord V). And Nikon says they have no plans to make a similar lens, so right now I'm gnashing my teeth.

Oops.. missed that.

both the 5T and 6T are 2 element diopters. The 5T is a 1.5x diopter and the 6T is a 3.0x (listed) but more like a 2.8-2.9 diopter.

They are 62mm and screw onto the front element of the NIkkor Micro lenses. These diopters can also be stacked and used together as they are threaded on both sides.

The weevil was about the size of a pencil eraser. That's the tip of the leaf, half eaten away. The entire leaf was about 2-3 inches long.

Julio
