Thanks Josh & Michele,

Josh, its really all about lighting. The non reflective black backdrops and using bounced cealing light can work for a number of different applications. It's worth paying a bit more for some good black velvet. You can adjust exposure compensation down when you shoot because your metering will generally try to overexpose when the electronics sense the large black area - sort of like trying to shoot the moon. Once you get the exposure correct the bounced cealing light makes for a nice, soft illumination. If you use a single spot on a tripod you can move it closer and further away from the cealing to change the effect from dynamic to flat. Here's another (fruit bowl) done in this manner - and a link to the full sized frame.

Best regards,

Lin

Lin,

Very nice images and most especially what this Sony DSC-R1 can do.

Thanks! It's definitely a great tool and is rapidly replacing my F828 for the things I formerly used a fixed lens camera for. I find that for much of my commercial work which involves small art objects needing lots of depth of field, my F828 was quicker and more efficient than my digital back or my dSLR's. It's easier to work with in troublesome lighting conditions because I can actually see potential problems before snapping the shutter (via the EVF or LCD). With my professional equipment it requires shooting then transferring the images to my notebook or desktop, finding the issues when there are issues and reshooting. It's still much easier than going back to film, but these high resolution, fixed lens cameras make this type photo very, very quick and easy to set up because I can see precisely how the lighting is affecting the shot before rather than after pressing the shutter.

I'm very happy with what Sony has done with this camera. Of course, like any tool, it has its limitations and strengths, but one only has to play to the strengths to get some really incredible results from the R1. I think Sony has a real winner in this camera.

Best regards,

Lin
