Default 'Sea' of Sea Mushrooms

Well actually just one, but it looks like a lot more up close. I have a large patch of these growing in my reef aquarium. They are amazingly colourful, especially when not fully expanded. The "mouth" extends usually during feeding time. Comments/feedback appreciated.

Thanks for looking.

Beautiful capture! It looks like a ricordia mushroom you've got there in a very clean reef tank. One thing about reef tank is the great "natural" lighting. Do you have LPS/SPS in there as well?

Yes, (thanks) I could not remember the type of mushroom but transcape5 is right it's a ricordia mushroom.

I'd love to try some LPS/SPS but I've gotten conflicting advice on whether I have enough light. I'm currently using a compact fluorescent system. It does produce great lighting though. I have an even mix of actinic and daylight bulbs, plus a few moonlight LEDs for when the main light are off.

Firstly, I'm very impressed at how healthy your reef looks. I know how hard that can be. Secondly, these are beautiful sea mushrooms. Excellent lighting, and the DoF of the second one really draws you in.

Thanks Paul, this tank has been setup for about 7 years now. It's gotten to the point where barring any major disasters it's pretty self sufficient. I try to avoid adding to many chemical and make sure to use the best salt possible. These mushrooms were the first inhabitants I added to the tank, I'm glad they are still here.

Very nice!
what i noticed is the lack of color cast from the actinic lights.
How did you get around that?

When all the lights are on the light is very white even with the mix of actinic light. I alternate my bulbs to get an even spread of light, some people prefer to have the actinic lights at the front and daylight at the back... All personal preference.
