Default Close-Up Enhancements for Canon EF 100mm Macro … and EF 100-400mm L?

Close-Up Enhancements for the Canon EF 100mm Macro … and the EF 100-400mm L?

1. - Can the Canon 500D close-up lens be used effectively as a front-lens addition to the Canon: (a) EF 100mm f/2.8 macro lens; (b) EF 100-400mm L telephoto lens? How would affect closest focus distance and image magnification?

2. - What about 12mm, 20mm, and 36mm extension tubes between the same lenses and a Canon EOS D60 camera body?

What are the pro and cons for such possibilities? Are these workable options … or just unnecessary “complications”? Thanks.

I have put some+1, +2, and +4 Diopter filters on a canon EF50mm Macro and EF100mm Macro lenses. You will definitely get some softness around the edges of the frame with this combo. I have had all three on at once too.

I just purchased a set of extension tubes to use with the macro lenses too.

My camera is a EOS-20D. I am looking to purchase a MKIII when I get all the funds together.

The 500D makes sense on the zoom but the macro already has enough close focus capability that something with more power makes more sense. The 68mm set of tubes on a 100 would get you a little closer if you really are needing to be closer than 1:1. The question is if you are really shooting that much that is closer than 1:1 and, if so, if your budget will allow the 65mm macro which is the 'right' way to shoot closer (down to 5:1).
