Rob, that is fantastic, now, did you use your 600mm and extention tubes?

No, no I do not make a habit of the big gun for macro, this was with the mp-e 65 macro lens

Hi Rob, I did a google search on the lens, yeper, that would be a lot easier to handle and tote around than your 600mm and not as expensive. This is the first I have heard of that lens, but I have not been into macro photography very long. I need to know, how close were you to your subject, and I will assume you used the flash ring.

Either I still don't understand how to use macro lens, but I will admit, I can not get any of my shots to look anything close to that. I did see some posted by someone who uses a EF 300mm f/4 L with a flash on a butterfly, and It too also was impressive. I will post one my shots I took, with my canon 20D, and a Canon EF macro 100-300mm f/5.6 using a canon 25mm extention tube. I can honestly say, I did not get the subject to jump out of the shot, like yours does.

Here is a link to this lens, http://www.luminous-landscape.com/re.../mp-e-65.shtml Look at the bottom of the page you will see the flash setup I use with this lens. The working distance is about 1.5 inches, from the front of the lens to the subject. I have used both the ring flash and the twin head flash and I prefer the twin flash over the ring flash. I feel I can control the light better with the dual head flash setup. Dof is very important in macro. I also take all my macro shots in manual mode, and I only manual focus. The mp-e 65 is only a manual focus lens. Practice, practice, practice is your best friend. I can hand hold macro lenses very well but I know many people that can not, try to use a tripod and a cable release, you will see great results with the tripod. I use flash for about 90% of my macro work. I first I hated this lens to the point just throw the thing away. I kept working with it and learned to love it. It is my most used macro lens. Hope it helps a bit. Any more questions please ask.

Rob
