Default which lightmeter

Which lightmeter do you use, and can anyone reccomend one that I won't need a second mortgage to buy.
Some are really expensive.

Depends on how you plan to use it.

I have a Minolta Flashmeter V which I'm completely happy with. I use it mainly to measure flash exposure in the studio. It's easy to check ratios with and has memory to compare readings. Reads in 1/10th stops or EV, pretty rugged, has dome and disc diffusors.

I've used Sekonics in the past and liked'em... I know nothing about modern Sekonic meters though.

I used a Pentax Spot V for a long time to take spot readings. I used it mainly to meter distant subjects (outdoor sports) I couldn't get to with an incident meter. Pretty specialized though, not a good first meter. It was a damn good meter, I wish I'd never sold it.

With your 20D, there may be little need for another meter except for a flash meter when using studio strobes. Over many years I've been content with inexpensive second-hand Wein, Calumet, and Gossen flash meters. Using simple equipment may be less convenient, but little less effective, than using the newer sophisticated meters. Like Blinky says, a Pentax spot meter is great in some applications.

Allan,

I really like the Sekonic L358 (with the transmitter module). It has been a true workhorse, and with the combination of this meter, and the Pocket Wizards, it has been a real time saver. Not only that but this is not one of those "break the bank" type meters, in fact I think they are going for around the mid-$200's...

I also use the Sekonic L358 for studio work. Other than that mostly just the one in the camera.

I have a Sekonic 308B. I can use it with my studio flash or outdoors. If I connect the sync cord to it, I can trigger the studio flash from the meter.

It does not have a remote function as I think the 358 can be fitted with. Both are good meters. Get the best with the money you have and don't worry about the rest.
