Default Scared of popping too bright

I'm always scared of making a picture too hot! I had lost the sun in these 2 shots. Should I have turned up the flash?

How much off are these?

Thanks for any help.

Thanks,

Pete

Looks OK to me. The adults seem a little saturated but I guess that is their complexion because the child seems a little pale. The overall exposure looks good.

There are no catch lights, and from looking at the shadows I don't see any evidence of flash being used in either image.

The little girls skin tone is much lighter than the adults and her forehead and cheeks looks a bit to hot in both images.

Overall I'd say the lighting is not very flattering because it is kind of flat. There are no shadows on their faces to provide modeling and depth. You can increase the power of the flash while decreasing the aperture opening and taking your shutter speed all the way to the cameras sync speed and get better seperation of your subjects from the background.

Do you use flash on or off the camera?

I used the 580 ex ii on camera, but I had it turned down some.

I do sports action shots, and this is different because I never use a flash, even at night.

Big learning curve that I never practice at.

That's the exact same problem I have. You should post some of your sports stuff over on our sports/action board!
