Default Bowens monolite 400 & Fresnel lens

Hi

I would like to use a fresnel spot on my monolite studio flash (L-type and not S-type)
has anybody ever try to make that combination : fresnel lens with a monolite Bowens flash strobe.

I'm not looking for continous light, but a flash.

is there any adaptor to mount on my bowens so that i can use it as a Fresnel ?

I don't want to get ride of my flashes. they keep on serving me well.

So, if someone can help me.

Thanks

No answer ? ... Sniff....

I've been looking on Ebay and others Web sites ..... but Nada.
Nothing similar to what I'm looking for.

I am quite disappointed cause i really want to find such an Item, or want to learn how to modify a fresnel spot and plug it with a strobe.

Anybody ever try to modify an old fresnel spot ? and convert it into a Fresnel strobe ?

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I did it with a smaller a/c flash, but I think the basics will work with any flash. Here is how I did mine. Find a Fresnel lens!!! I had an old Photogenic boom light (usually used as a hair light) that no longer worked so I removed the lens (it is glass) and I took one of the barn door adapters that fits onto the flash head and it turned out that the edge of the lens was about 1/8th of an inch larger than the adapter so i took a die grinder and removed just enough of the adapter material so the lens would lay flat in the adapter. Works wonderfully!

I've seen several of these lenses on ebay in the last six months or so. There was one that sold for $15.00 several months ago. Type in Photogenic and click on Cameras.

Hi Benji

thanks for your answer.
seems that you're the perfect smart and "handy" worker.

question :
1) the way you worked it out, is : adapt a fresnel lens to a boom light
2) how would you do with a fresnel hotspot ?
just remove the internal lamp ?

Thanks

I have an Altman unit that I picked up used. It's the front half of a focusing altman spot light (not a freznel) with a flash head mount on the back. I've used it for backlighting effects by putting a cookie in it and adding some fog.

The unit I have is based on this casting. http://mail.altmanltg.com/publicsyne...ID=&Country=US

Lebooster,

1) the way you worked it out, is : adapt a fresnel lens to a boom light. No I removed the lens FROM the boom light and attached it to an a/c flash unit.

2) how would you do with a fresnel hotspot ? It makes a round spot when at the proper distance.

When I ellipsoidal light steel cookies will make nice crisp edges in the light so I can make a 'rays of light' look. Does that work well with a fresnel too?

I bet there are many ways to make something like this that works well.

If you modify something like the altman Iight I linked to you would modify the stage light to accept the strobe as an attachment. Be sure to choose a type that uses a standard aluminum casting so you can modify it once you've removed the hot light. Cut the casting and fabricate a bracket to hold the strobe by it's light stand mount such that the flash tube is in roughly the same spot the hot light was in.

This is a pre-made one for an Elinchrom. (link goes to B&H)

Either way you go, don't open the strobe casing. The voltages inside are deadly. Besides, you can make this work either the way mine works or the way Benji did it without having to dedicate a strobe.

Before I retired I was using many of these Photographing cars in studio, made by a company called Hensell ,these came with a bowens fitting and I could run a 4000 joule pack through each,
It was a standard studio spot converted to modeling light and flash tube, you could even move the tube backwards and forwards to change the pread angle. I'm sure that you could pick up a cheap spot from any film studio or lighting company after all they upgrade all the time and sell on to the East then either do a home job or ask a flash technition to do it, any good photographer should know one in your region.
