Default Chimera Speedring

I have recently purchased a Sunpak 400 Studio Strobe with a Chimera "Medium" Softbox on a speedring. It is an excellent setup and I love it and I got the entire unit for less than the cost of a new "Medium" Chimera Softbox.

I do have a slight problem with the size of this unit. I often photograph dogs in peoples houses that have limited space. The Chimera "Medium" Softbox is in my opinion gigantic - measuring 36" x 48" and too big for areas with limited space. I knew that this light setup would be extremely large, however I have plenty of space in my home studio and size is no problem. In fact, if I want to shoot a full-length portrait or a portrait of several people, the "medium" softbox is great.

Does any forum member know if all Chimera Softboxes will fit the ir speedrings. In other words, if I purchase a smaller softbox; will it mount on the same speedring.

I've only seen one size speedring. I regulary move my speedring between different size softboxes (from different manufacturers). I believe the Chimera, Plume, and at least one or two others have compatible speedrings.

The speedring is generally made to fit most any softbox to a certain type of light head. So, like John says, you can use that ring to fit Chimera boxes or other boxes to your light.

There is an exception, though you probably won't run into it on a smaller box... Some Chimera strips and large softboxes use a two head speedring and they will not work with a regular single head speedring because the angles are wrong.
