pbase - Are you referring to the photographer's website and his Photogenic Weekend column, or the page of the various photos I collected?

A lot of behind the scenes video of some photoshoots, there's the end results after each segment.
Or just enjoy

Screen layer mask is one way to do it in post. It's also possible to edge the exposure toward the highlight side and prioritize the shadow detail at processing time; you could do it that way with digital or film.

Doh! I can't watch google videos because they are prohibited in China. Grrr......

If any of you wants to save that video onto your harddrive, you can use this: http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php

I'd appreciate it if someone could download that video and then repost it for me. You can use http://beta.yousendit.com/ for free temporary hosting. Thanks in advance!

I used different proxy solutions and I guess google just detects your location and ban the whole country.

Holy Cow that's a big video! Surprised at the size since most publically available videos aren't usually that big. Guess I'll have to wait till I move back to the States. . ..

Maybe someone who's watched did can describe a few significant technical insights into the shoots?

Sorry for my late answer to your question, Lunatique.
I was referring to the photographers page, not your samples.
The samples you gathered exhibit the exact effect I'm trying
to acheive.

pbase - Ok, thanks for clarifying.

I managed to find a bunch of Japanese idol videos that contain shooting sessions at various community video websites like youtube.com and others. Just search relevant keywords and tons will pop up.

The only think I could really see that might make a bit of difference is that they love using lightbanks (long rectangular softboxes). I don't think it's really that though. It's just a different sense of aesthetics in the end--the lighting ratio, the level of exposure, the preference for combination of natural sunlight and a large fill light..etc. I've never tried to really replicate the look, but when I have free time again, I'm going to give it a shot and post the results here.
